In the Montessori literacy curriculum, children are taught to read phonetically. Beginning with the “I Spy Game”, the Child builds their vocabulary using objects specifically chosen for this game. Listening games encourage children to hear (and visualise) the letters making the sounds of the words. Repetition of these games trains little ears to identify the individual sound of the letter of the object selected for the I Spy game. The next step takes the Child to the objects for the pink series, used in conjunction with the pink series box 1.
These 21 objects form Pink Box 1 of the The Montessori Pink Reading Series. Used in conjunction with the large movable alphabet letters and the mat for the large movable alphabet, the Child learns to phonetically sound out each letter of the 3-letter phonetic word with a short vowel sound, i.e. consonant – vowel – consonant (or the CVC word). It does not take a lot for the Child to grab the initiative and start making their own words.

When this relationship is built on trust, respect, and authentic love, the child feels safe and inspired to explore. As Dr. Maria Montessori explained, it is through this deep connection that learning is joyfully and naturally absorbed. Montessori called h…
